Measuring For Custom Axles

When purchasing custom axles it is important to verify the Axle length, Axle Face dimensions  Housing End type, and Brake Space to assure proper fit.



Measuring Axle Length

Currie uses the X and Y dimensions shown below to determine the length of custom axles. All dimensions should be accurate to 1/16 of an inch to assure a proper fit.

For the "X" dimension (Driver's side axle) hook the tape measure on the stud (as shown) and measure to the outside edge of the end flange.



For the "Y" dimension (passenger side axle) hook the tape measure on the stud (as shown) and measure to the outside edge of the end flange.



Axle Face Dimensions

Axle face and register diameter are essential dimensions for proper brake fitment. A slightly smaller axle face diameter is acceptable, as this does not create clearance issues for brake fitment. The register diameter is a critical dimension as it serves to locate both the drum or disc brake rotor. Use a dial or digital caliper to measure the register diameter to 1/1000th of an inch accuracy. Brake Space

Brake Space (BS) is the distance from the face of the housing end to the face of the axle; this is a critical dimension for proper brake fitment. If your housing end type and brake space dimensions do not match the options below, please contact sales to speak with one of our experts.



Late Big Bearing = 2.5 in. brake space

Early Big Bearing = 2.365 in. brake space

Small Bearing  = 2.52 in. brake space


Housing End Types

Below are shown the three housing ends that Currie Enterprises uses when manufacturing a custom & rear end. For new rearends, the Late Model Large Bearing end is the standard. For replacement rear ends, where the original brakes or axles will be reused it is important to specify the correct housing end type. Refer to the images and dimensions below to identify your vehicle's housing end type.

The following are estimations of oil capacities for your new 9-inch and Currie® axle assemblies. Extreme pinion angles, as well as aftermarket components (such as diff covers), may drastically change the unit’s capacity.
